The Drop Protocol
Every case enters our lab as a retail unit, purchased anonymously — no press samples, no pre-release units with "improved" coatings we can't verify. From unboxing to final verdict, we document everything.
Step 1 — Baseline fit test
We verify button alignment, port cutout tolerances, and wireless charging pass-through before any destructive testing begins. A case that blocks MagSafe fails before it hits the floor.
Step 2 — 1.2 m pocket drop
Simulates the most common real-world drop scenario: phone slipping from a standing-height pocket. Performed 5× on each face (screen, back, all four corners).
Step 3 — 2 m concrete drop
The metric most manufacturers advertise. We perform this test 3× per corner — 12 drops total — on actual concrete, not foam-padded drop tables.
Step 4 — Scratch abrasion test
Keys, coins, and sandpaper run across the screen cutout edge for 60 seconds. If the lens protector catches scratches, we call it.
Step 5 — Grip fatigue test
48 hours of simulated handling — repeated grip/release cycles — to identify whether grip material degrades or separates from the case body.
Step 6 — Heat and humidity soak
4 hours at 40 °C / 80% humidity. We're looking for adhesive failure, warping, and discoloration in materials not rated for sustained heat.
Step 7 — 30-day real-carry evaluation
The surviving case ships home with one of our testers for 30 days. Real lint. Real keys. Real drops we didn't plan for.
What "Editor's Pick" Means
An Editor's Pick badge means the product cleared every stage of our protocol and scored above 4.5 on our compound rating. We award it to roughly 1 in 5 products we test.
